Employee, fired after filing recall petition, may sue employer, city and office holder
After a substance abuse counselor for a nonprofit treatment facility returned to work after testifying on a petition he had filed to recall the president of the Detroit City Council, he was asked to report to his supervisors who questioned him about the meeting and fired him the next day. The employer also wrote a letter of apology to the Council president on behalf of the agency, which received a significant part of its income from the City. According to the employee’s complaint, the president demanded that he be fired if the agency wanted to continue to receive funding. The employee has sued the employer, the City, and the Council president for violation of the state’s Whistleblower...
