Our youth sports program follows a set of rules that list certain plays to follow on the field. There's a rule that a previous board has stated we need to follow but neither the former secretary nor president has board meeting minutes to justify the rule. If the record keeping was not up to par, should this old rule be enforced or should the new board to decide now that there's a better record keeper in place?
Rules approved by a board are not cast in concrete and can normally be changed by a subsequent reconsideration. Assuming you have been following the rule for the last couple of years, you should probably continue to follow it, based on the theory that you would not have started following it if it had not been approved at some time. But if a number of the directors think it is not a good rule, the board can reconsider the question and make a decision on whether or not to keep it. That way you can have a clear written record, and maybe even an agreement on what you ought to do.
