Nonprofit CEO liable for misuse of aunt’s funds

The CEO of a nonprofit has been held personally liable for misuse of funds improperly transferred from his aunt’s account to the organization and used by the CEO for his personal benefit. The Court of Appeals of Mississippi has affirmed a trial court decision finding the CEO liable for $218,000 in damages to his aunt. After Florence Aldridge’s husband died and her medical condition deteriorated, she gave Louis Aldridge, her husband’s brother, a power of attorney over her finances in 2003. Over the next several years, he transferred more than $500,000 of her assets to himself, his wife, his son Brian, a nonprofit called Touched by an Angel Ministries, which was formed to operate summer camps...
